Hairstyles That Match Your Face
Have you ever wondered why some people seem to be able to "pull off" certain hairstyles better than others? The secret? It's all (okay, mostly) about face shape. Different styles and lengths of hair are more flattering on certain face shapes than others. The key to finding a hairstyle that accentuates your best features and truly makes you look your best is knowing your unique face shape and choosing a cut that complements it.
Not sure where to begin? We've got you covered!
Determine Your Face Shape
Many people have trouble determining their own face shape. Generally, face shapes fall into one of six categories:
Take a quick look in the mirror; which of the above descriptors comes to mind first when you assess your face shape? Typically, your gut instinct is going to be spot-on here. If you're having a hard time determining your face shape, though, you can actually take some specific measurements to confirm.
Specifically, this can be done by using a ruler (ideally a fabric ruler) to measure across your forehead at its widest point, across your cheekbones at their widest length, and at your jawline at its widest point. From there, you can get a better idea of where you fall. A person with a heart-shaped face, for example, will have measurements that are wider at the forehead and more narrow at the jawline.
Highlight Your Best Features with a Hairstyle to Suit Your Face
Once you've determined your face shape, it's all about choosing a hairstyle that will accentuate your best features—and perhaps even downplay some of those features you're not so fond of. Below are some general suggestions and ideas for the most common face shapes.
Oval Faces - you're in luck! The oval face shape is the most versatile and is suited for nearly any hairstyle or length.
Long Faces - shorter styles are great for balancing out the length of the face. The more volume, the better!
Round Faces - longer cuts (below the chin or shoulders) are great for slightly elongating the face.
Heart-Shaped Faces - short cuts are great for accentuating those beautiful cheekbones, as are longer cuts with layers and lots of volume.
Square Faces - textured styles with choppy ends can help to downplay sharper angles of the jaw, and length can be versatile.
What About Bangs?
From side-swept to blunt and everything in between, you have lots of options when it comes to bangs. Which will look best on you? When deciding on bangs, it's generally best to remember that bangs should draw attention to your eyes and elongate your face. Blunt bangs, for example, are great for those with square or otherwise angular faces; this style can help to soften those bolder features of the face.
On the other hand, side-swept bangs are flattering on nearly all face types and complement just about any hairstyle or texture. Plus, they don't require the same amount of maintenance and routine styling that blunt bangs can.
Remember the Most Important "Rule"
When it comes to hairstyles and face shapes, there are all kinds of "rules" and guidelines that tell you what you should (and shouldn't!) do. At the end of the day, however, it's most important to choose a hairstyle that you feel great about. If that means throwing all the rules out the window, then so be it. The best hairstyle for you is one that you can rock with confidence!
